Michael D. Orlando is a partner in the Del Mar office of the law firm Sheppard Mullin. He is Team Leader of the firm's Technology Transactions Team and a member of the Artificial Intelligence team. Michael has more than 20 years of experience advising clients on the legal issues involving emerging and disruptive technologies and business models, including artificial intelligence.
His practice focuses on advising cutting-edge technology companies and innovators in developing, commercializing, and procuring technology, including in connection with licensing, outsourcing, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, collaborations, strategic partnerships and commercial agreements.
He advises companies on AI policies, AI governance committees, AI terms and conditions, and AI due diligence, and regularly provides training on legal issues involving the use of artificial intelligence, including generative-AI. Michael’s experience includes advising JaguarLand Rover in its strategic collaboration with Waymo for the development of theAI-driven autonomous vehicles used for Waymo’s driverless robotaxi service, and advising Amazon Web Services on strategic initiatives, including AI-related products and services.
He is a member of the Artificial Intelligence Committee of the International Technology Law Association and is a Legal 500 ranked attorney in the Media,Technology and Telecoms category.

Alex A. Akhavan is an associate in the Entertainment, Technology and Advertising Practice Group Sheppard Mullin's Century City office. Today, he represents producers, studios, media companies and networks in connection with entertainment productions throughout the United States and around the world and was recognized in Variety’s Legal Impact Report “Up Next” list of top entertainment attorneys.
Alex specializes in film and television transactions, focusing on animation and visual effects. He serves as outside counsel for Disney Television Animation and managed visual effects agreements for Amazon Studios’ production of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. He has also advised Nickelodeon and Televisa Univision on animated projects.
As a production attorney, Alex served as lead outside production counsel for Amazon’s Swarm, negotiating with creators and cast members. He also worked with Campanario Entertainment on Selena: The Series and MGM on Vanderpump Rules season 10.
Alex has extensive experience in unscripted sports-related content, negotiating deals for Amazon's Top Class and Reborn: JR Smith, and for Skydance Sports on Good Rivals. He regularly conducts chain-of-title reviews and negotiates rights and services agreements for both domestic and international productions. He advised Gaumont USA on clearance matters for El Presidente and works with the Los Angeles Opera as a pro bono client.
Alex received his law degree from the UCLA School of Law where he was a board member of the UCLA Law Review and specialized in Entertainment, Media and Intellectual Property law. He received his B.A. from Tufts University where he double majored in international relations and philosophy. He is a member of Sheppard Mullin’s French and Latin America teams.
A history buff, Alex produces and hosts a podcast about constitutional law called “May It Please the Court,” which tells stories about the Supreme Court of the United States in a narrative episodic format.
